Abstract

Wood-pulp is obtained by cooking wood-chips with an aqueous solution of a bisulphite containing an excess of sulphur dioxide, the sulphite liquor being continuously circulated through a closed system comprising a vessel containing the wood-chips, one or more heaters, a second vessel containing copper, which may be in the form of gauze or filings, and a separating device, such as a filter, for removing copper sulphide from the liquor before it is again passed through the vessel containing the wood. The presence of copper inhibits or <PICT:0703102/IV(a)/1> reduces the formation of sulphate, particularly scale-forming calcium sulphate. Copper sulphide is formed during the cooking. As shown, wood chips are packed in vessel 1, and the sulphite liquor is continuously circulated through vessel 1, external heater 2, pump 3, a second heater 4, a container 5 containing copper, and a filter 6 for removing copper sulphide. If desired, the vessel for the wood, the vessel for the copper, and the filter, may be built into a single container which has three separate but connected compartments. In an example, spruce wood-chips are packed in container 1, and copper gauze is placed in container 5. Sulphite liquor containing 6 per cent. total sulphur dioxide and 1.2 per cent. combined sulphur dioxide in the form of sodium sulphite is continuously circulated through the system, the temperature being raised gradually to 110 DEG C., kept at this temperature for 2.5 hours, then raised gradually to 150 DEG C., and maintained at this point for 1.67 hours. The maximum pressure is 120 lb. per sq. in. Specification 206,570, [Class 2 (ii)] is referred to. The Provisional Specification describes a process in which the sulphite liquor, the wood, and the copper are heated together in a single vessel.
