Abstract

Wood is pulped for the manufacture of paper by digestively treating it in sulphate cooking liquor to which has been added silicic acid or an alkali silicate, or more than one of these materials in an amount of 0.01% to 1% calculated as SiO2 as a percentage of the oven-dry weight of the wood treated. Black liquor from the process may be evaporated and burned; salt cake may be added and the product dissolved and causticized with lime to yield a white liquor which can then be reused with further silicic acid or silicate. A composite sheet may be made by supplying a major portion of pulp to the wire of a Fourdrinier machine, and then after partial dewatering superimposing a minor portion of pulp, the minor portion having been treated by the process of the invention, the major portion by a conventional sulphate process, or by a process using a lower proportion of silicic acid or silicate than the major portion.
