Abstract

Insulating material comprises sulphite cellulose liquor, or lignin material derived therefrom, which has been subjected to a heat treatment beyond that necessary for drying. Treating temperatures specified are 120-240 DEG C. or 240-270 DEG C. or even 375 DEG C. A small quantity of a colouring substance and also of a finely disintegrated mineral substance, e.g. talc may be present. The material may be applied to a surface then subjected to the heat treatment and then covered with a layer of a water resisting substance, e.g. water glass. The heat treatment may be such as to produce ligno-sulphonic acid salts and, if a preliminary treatment to remove the alkaline constituents is used, free ligno-sulphonic acids. Aldehydes and organic acids particularly polybasic and oxyacids may be added during this preliminary treatment.
