Abstract
In the preparation of acid activated bleaching montmorillonite clays, the clay is subjected to mechanical working involving vigorous shearing of the clay particles, prior to the acid activation, the clay having a moisture content of 20-50 per cent. The clay may be the moist raw clay as mined, or may be a powdered clay mixed with water. The mechanical working may involve mulling or extrusion. The original clay may consist of particles of which at least 50 per cent by weight have an equivalent spherical diameter of less than 10 microns, in which case the clay is activated with acid equivalent to at least one part of sulphuric acid to two parts of clay (calculated on the dry clay). Sulphuric acid is preferably employed, but other strong mineral acids, e.g. hydrochloric acid, may also be employed.
