Abstract
In the preparation of phosphoric acid from natural phosphates using sulphuric acid, a complex silicate or iron and alumina, and sodium sulphate is added to the natural phosphates. The additives are suitably added dry, in crushed form to the crushed phosphates prior to mixture with the sulphuric acid. Typically 5% of complex silicate and 4.8% sodium sulphate are used based on the total magma of phosphates and sulphuric acid, e.g. for a natural phosphate containing 1.8% silica and 3.8% fluorine, the complex silicate containing 45% by weight of silica. Suitable complex silicates are naturally occurring silicates containing iron and silica, e.g. halygorskyte clays, and clays issuing from the washing of iron ores and phosphates.
