Abstract

In the defluorination of phosphate rock, the rock is calcined at a temperature of at least 2200 DEG F. in the presence of water vapour and an acid phosphate compound and a sodium compound. The proportions of the reactants are so chosen that (1) the weight ratio of the added sodium compound (calculated as Na2O) to the added acid phosphate compound (calculated as P2O5) is kept between 0,5 and 0,8; (2) the amount of acid phosphate compound (calculated as P2O5) added to the charge is maintained between 7 and 12% by weight of the total charge on a dry basis; (3) the amount of sodium compound (calculated as Na2O) in the charge is kept between 0,3 and 0,7 mol. per mol. of P2O5 present in the phosphate rock; (4) the silica content of the charge is kept between 2% and 6% by weight of the total charge on a dry basis; and (5) the CaO, Na2O, P2O5 and SiO2 content of the combined phosphate rock and reagent mixture is kept such that the mol. ratio of these constituents according to the formula Mols CaO+Na2O-3P2O5/Mols SiO2 does not exceed 1,1. The charge consisting of the reagent mixture and the phosphate rock may be premixed in a mill, formed into pellets (which may be dried) and heated to a temperature of at least 2200 DEG F. but not greater than 2700 DEG F. in a rotary kiln or fluidized bed; in the former case the charge mixture can be introduced in the form of a slurry. The sodium-containing reagent is usually commercial light soda ash having an Na2O content of about 58%, although sodium bicarbonate, hydroxide, phosphate or chloride may be used. p The acid phosphate reagent is usually crude commercial phosphoric acid obtained by reacting sulphuric acid with a phosphate-bearing material, e.g. phosphate rock, but acidic sodium salts of phosphoric acid may be employed. The invention is an improvement in that disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 2,839,377 in which the rock was calcined at at least 2,600 DEG F., the Na2O to P2O5 content of the reaction mixture was between 1,6 and 2,8 and the amount of P2O5 is less than 6% by weight of the total charge. The ratio Mols CaO+Na2O-3P2O5/Mols SiO2 was between 1,3 and 2,8.
