Abstract
Na trimetaphosphate, or a mixture with other condensed phosphates, having a Na/P ratio below 1.45, is produced by maintaining a mixture of H3PO4 and a Na halide, having the required Na/P ratio, at 275-625 DEG C. without melting until the product contains more than 25% trimetaphosphate. Heating may be continued until at least 75% of the H3PO4 has reacted. A slurry of the acid and halide may be introduced into a rotary calciner containing a hot bed of particulate product, the weight of the slurry being at most half that of the bed, so that the temperature does not fall below 400 DEG C. The mixture is then heated at 400-625 DEG C. until reaction is complete, and the product is ground and screened if necessary and divided into 2 parts (e.g. 12:1), the larger of which is returned to the calciner. The process may be operated batchwise or continuously. NaCl, NaBr, NaI or NaF may be used, and the acid may be wet process acid (containing some HCl) from treating phosphate rock with HCl, or "superphosphoric" acid (P2O5 content up to 87%).
