Abstract

Hydrated crystalline calcium silicates in porous integrated structural form of light density (i.e. less than 40 lbs./cubic foot) are obtained by forming an aqueous slurry of finely divided lime and silica and a crystalline hydrated calcium silicate of high specific surface area, mixing the slurry to form a uniform, stable suspension, and reacting at above 175 DEG C. and 130 p.s.i. abs., e.g. in a mould for 8 to 15 hours. The slurry has a CaO/SiO2 ratio of 0.65:1 to 1:1 and preferably a water/solid ratio greater than 1:1 and the lime and silica are present in about the same proportions as in the silicate. Specified products have compositions corresponding with the formul mentioned below or are fibrous structures of CaO/SiO2 ratio .65 to .780 or are mixtures thereof. Hydrated calcium silicate should constitute about 5 to 30 per cent of the total solids. The hydrated silicate of high surface area may comprise discrete particles of 4CaO.5SiO2.5H2O (see Specification 742,145), or particles of 5CaO.5SiO2.H2O (see Specification 702,057) obtained by means of a colloid mill. Specification 658,427 [Group V] also is referred to.
