Abstract
545,135. Saccharifying cellulosic materials. FERRARI, D., and TORRESI, M. March 3, 1941, No. 2844. Convention date, March 2, 1940. [Class 127] Cellulosic material, e.g. straw, husks, chaff, or wood dust is crushed and mechanically disintegrated to a particle size as that of wood meal, e.g. in a closed container, whilst slowly applying a fine spray of concentrated sulphuric acid e.g. of 60‹Be the acid being applied for 2 to 3 hours; the mixture is allowed to mature for 8 to 10 hours at 100‹C. and is then kneaded at great mechanical pressure in a closed container whilst adding cold water. The dense liquid thus obtained is treated with steam at 120 to 130‹C. to distil off furfural &c. and to complete hydrolysis.
