Abstract

A hard water-resistant wood substitute is obtained by mixing lignocellulose particles with a phenol or a substance containing a phenol, in an amount of 2-10 per cent of a phenol and then pressing the mixture at elevated temperature and at a pressure of 150 to 1000 lbs. per square inch. The cellulosic material may be sawdust or chips less than 1/16 inch thick of raw pine or douglas fir. The product may be modified by adding mineral oil, petrolatum, lignin from paper and from the hydrolysis of cellulose, including indulin, tall oil, soap, and the stearates of zinc, magnesium, calcium and aluminium. The preferred binder is cresylic acid, and a temperature from 245-260 DEG C. for 7-20 minutes is preferably employed.
