Abstract

Moulded articles such as boards are obtained by digesting lignocellulosic material such as sawdust, optionally with the addition of barks, pine needles, leaves, straw, dry grass, peat and tans with aqueous alkali to decompose the lignocellulose, the amount of alkali being such that at the end of said treatment the aqueous phase is not alkaline, separating the bulk of the aqueous digestion liquid from the digested solid product, mixing the product with a synthetic resin which is insoluble in water in its finally condensed state and moulding the mixture by applying pressure and heat. 5-50 per cent of cork dust, wood flour, or defibrinated pulp may be added prior to or subsequent to alkali treatment. The resin may be a phenol-or urea-formaldehyde thermosetting resin and may be incorporated in the dry state in solution or dispersion, or dispersed on a filler such as cork dust or leather dust. Asbestos or glass fibres may be used as additional fillers. The boards obtained may be faced with veneers, fibre sheets or metal foils and the surface may be rendered acid-proof, or water-repellent, by means of paraffin emulsions or drying oils.ALSO:Moulded articles such as boards are obtained by digesting lignocellulosic material such as sawdust optionally with the addition of barks, pine needles, leaves, straw, dry grass, peat and tans with aqueous alkali to decompose the lignocellulose, the amount of alkali being such that at the end of said treatment the aqueous phase is not alkaline separating the bulk of the aqueous digestion liquid from the digested solid product, mixing the product with a synthetic resin which is insoluble in water in its finally condensed state and moulding the mixture by applying pressure and heat.
