Abstract

A process for producing pulp from bagasse fibers of sugarcane in yields greater than 60 percent, the pulp having a brightness g.e. Greater than 55 and an opacity greater than 90, characterized by (a) prehydrolyzing the core-free bagasse fibers at a ph of 4.5 to 5.8, in the presence of 70 to 100 weight percent moisture, based on the completely dry weight of the fiber feed and under autogenous steam pressures, at temperatures within the range of 171º c, at 188º c, over a period of time sufficient to remove from 40 percent to 60 weight percent of the content pentosan original of bagasse fiber feed; (b) then, raising the ph of the prehydrolyzed fibers to at least 8.5, by the addition of alkali metal silicate or alkali metal bisulfite or mixtures thereof, alone or together with other alkaline chemical digestion materials, which are required to provide the required ph and digest at the alkaline ph and at the same steam pressures and temperatures, for an additional period of time sufficient to reduce the total content of the hemicellulose from the original bagasse fiber feed, up to a scale of 20 to 22 weight percent; and (c) then adding to the slurry, when required, sufficient quantities of an alkali metal silicate to provide a total amount of 0.8 to 1.3 weight percent silicate, based on the completely dry weight of the feeding of original bagasse fiber.
