Abstract
846,232. Production of paper pulp. HAWAIIAN DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd., and CROWN ZELLERBACH CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1959 [Jan. 14, 1958], No. 1170/59. Class 96. Paper-making pulp is prepared by mixing non-woody lignocellulosic material, e.g. whole or de-pithed bagasse, straw, or grasses, with at least one alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide liquor, e.g. the hydroxide of sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium, barium, or strontium having a pH value of at least 12, the mixture having a liquor to dry lignocellulose ratio of 2 to 100 to 1; maintaining the temperature at 50‹ to 250‹ F. until the lignocellulose has exhausted 1 to 7% of its own weight of the hydroxide (calculated as NaOH), thereby softening the lignocellulose without substantially delignifying it, and mechanically defibrating the softened material, e.g. using a single, double, or multiple disc refiner, rod mill, ball mill, or hammer mill, to form a mechanical pulp. Such pulp may be mixed with 1 to 50% of chemical pulp. It may be bleached, e.g. by adding 0.2 to 5% of an alkali metal hydrosulphite of which 5 to 95% may be added during softening, and the rest after defibrating. The softening may be effected continuously using a tank of liquor maintained at the required concentration, the treated material being drained or passed through a screw press, squeeze rolls, or a washer for removal of liquor which may be returned to the tank.
