Abstract
1299531 Treating glass surfaces UNITED GLASS Ltd 19 April 1971 [16 March 1970] 12536/70 Heading C1M To give a matt finish to a glass surface, in particular glass bottles, there is applied to the surface while it is at a temperature of 300‹ C. or above, a solution of an alkali in a mixture of water and a lower alcohol, i.e. a C 1-6 alcohol. Preferably ethyl alcohol is used with one or more of LiOH; NaOH and KOH. The solution may be formed by mixing a 20-70% by wt. solution in water of the alkali with alcohol so that the final solution contains 30-90% by volume of alcohol. The action of the alkali may be terminated, to give more uniform results, by reacting any remaining alkali with an acidic gas such as SO 2 or HCl. Treatment is preferably directly after forming and before annealing, as by passing between atomizing sprays under a hood, the acidic gas being then provided in the annealing lehr.
