Abstract
To improve the physical and chemical properties of glass, an alkali metal ion within the surface layer of a glass article is exchanged with a larger monovalent ion from an external source at an elevated temperature below the glass strain point, the glass article being formed from an alkali-zirconia-silica glass composed essentially of an alkali metal oxide, at least 5% by weight of ZrO2, silica and 0-20% by weight of other compatible glass producing ingredients. A number of examples of compositions are given. The preferred ion exchange is sodium-potassium. Specifications 454,448, 786,951, 917,388, 966,733, 966,734 and U.S.A. Specification 2,075,446 are referred to.
