Abstract

A glass object having a vitreous-crystalline surface layer under compressive stress is made by heating a glass object at 650-750 DEG C. and then at 800-950 DEG C. The glass has composition, in weight per cent: SiO2, 50-70; Al2O3, 20-38; Li2O, 5-10; MgO, 0-5; Na2O, 0-0.3; P2O5, 0.2-3; ZrO2, 0.5-2.5. The surface layer may be 70-120m thick, and is substantially transparent.
