Abstract

A plastic material is made by mixing syrupy potassium silicate and calcium carbonate, adding syrupy sodium silicate, rosin, kaolin and magnesia, kneading the mass and adding a small quantity of dilute acid thereto, adding casein (part of which may be previously treated with alkali) and a trace of formaldehyde, and incorporating cellulosic material such as paper pulp, sawdust or rag powder. Alternatively, part of the casein may be added after the cellulosic material, each such addition being followed by addition of formaldehyde. The paste is moulded under high pressure and dried in a current of air, preferably between gratings loaded with weights.
