Abstract

The viscosity of solutions of cellulose or of cellulose derivatives, such as solutions of viscose, is determined by the absorptive capacity for alkali solution of the original cellulose material; the absorptive capacity is measured by determining the weight of a solution of caustic alkali of standard strength that will be absorbed by a standard weight of the material, for instance, in the form of pasteboard. As the absorptive capacity is higher, so must the ripening of the alkali cellulose be permitted to proceed to a greater extent, either by prolonging the process or by the employment of a stronger caustic alkali solution, say, of 24 per cent as compared with the normal 18 per cent strength.
