Abstract
2-Methyl-2-propyl-propane-diol-1,3 is produced by epoxidising 2-methyl-pentene-1 with peracetic acid by known methods to give 2-methyl-pentene-epoxide-1,2, rearranging the epoxide at elevated temperature in the presence of phosphoric acid, and condensing the 2-methyl-pentenal so formed by known methods with formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline condensing agent. Preferably the rearrangement is effected by passing the epoxide in vapour form over a phosphoric acid-silica gel catalyst at 100 DEG -300 DEG C. Alternatively the rearrangement may be carried out at a temperature below 100 DEG C. and at reduced pressure. If desired the epoxide may be mixed with a diluent such as nitrogen or steam before being passed over the phosphoric acid catalyst.
