Abstract

Active carbon is produced by impregnating wood, for example eucalyptus wood, preferably in the form of wood chips, with an aqueous solution containing from 0.5 to 2 per cent by weight of phosphoric acid, carbonizing the impregnated wood, treating with sufficient ammonia to neutralize the phosphoric acid and activating with water vapour. The ammonia is employed in any suitable form and may be present in the water vapour effecting activation.
