Abstract

A surgical dressing comprises an alginic composition of an alginic material and from 0.5 per cent to 10 per cent of its weight of an acid other than alginic acid. Gauze, obtained as described in the parent Specification and composed of a combination of alginic acid and calcium alginate, is passed through a 5 per cent-10 per cent solution of a non-alginic acid e.g. phosphoric acid. Gauze treated with tyrothircin in propylene glycol and alginic acid in ammonium hydroxide, as described in the parent Specification, is passed through a 5 per cent-10 per cent solution of non-alginic acid e.g. nitric acid. Citric, maleic, malic or tartaric acids may alternatively be used. Specifications 21586/12, [Class 2 (iii)], and 629,419 also are referred to.
