Abstract
Cellulose, starch or like carbohydrates are saccharified by treating them with a small quantity of sulphuric acid in amount not exceeding 1 per cent relatively to the carbohydrate and in the form of an aqueous solution of up to about 1 per cent strength, preferably between 1/4 and 1/2 per cent strength, in amount not substantially exceeding four times the weight of the carbohydrate treated. The treatment is carried out at temperatures not substantially exceeding 150 DEG C., and a pressure of 4-9 atmospheres may be used. The carbohydrate may be impregnated with an excess of acid which is pressed out before the saccharification. The materials may be heated by passing through them high pressure steam, superheated steam, nitrogen or carbon dioxide.
