Abstract

Cellulosic material is saccharified by heating it under pressure with acid, withdrawing the liquor and subjecting it while still hot and under pressure to a further heating at about 160-180 DEG C., and then while still hot and under pressure it is passed through a decolorizing or defecating material to remove fermentation inhibiting substances. The defecating material may be phosphate-containing substances such as granular phosphate rock or animal charcoal or residual lignin obtained by the hydrolysis of cellulosic materials and impregnated with salts of phosphoric acid. The liquors at all stages are kept distinctly acid. An example is given of the treatment of the liquor resulting from the treatment of cellulosic material with weak sulphuric acid.
