Abstract
1,249,037. Leather substitute. ALGEMENE KUNSTZIJDE UNIE N.V. 17 April, 1969 [17 April, 1968], No. 19735/69. Heading D1R. A sheet of shammy-type material is produced by shrinking a web of retractable polyvinyl alcohol fibres or filaments and treating it with an aqueous solution of PVA and a water soluble resin, e.g. a composition of melamine and formaldehyde. The web is then contacted with a liquid, e.g. an aqueous Na 2 SO 4 solution, in which the resin is practically insoluble, to coagulate the PVA and produce a filled web. This web is then treated with an acetalizing agent, e.g. an acidified aqueous solution of formaldehyde at a temperature of at least 40C. to render the PVA insoluble in hot water and to partly remove the resin composition. The web is then washed and dried.
