Abstract

Synthetic resins are prepared by adding a neutral or alkaline condensation product of urea and thiourea with formaldehyde to a hot acid condensation solution of urea with formaldehyde, and continuing the heating until a resinous product precipitates on cooling. Preferably a non-acid solution containing urea, thiourea, and formaldehyde in the molecular proportions of 1 : 1 : 2 is introduced into an acid solution containing at least 2 molecular proportions of formaldehyde to 1 of urea until 1 molecular proportion of combined urea and thiourea corresponds to 1,4-1,8 of formaldehyde. In its simplest form, the process comprises the addition of a neutral solution of monomethylolurea and monomethylolthiourea to a hot acid solution of dimethylolurea. Examples are given. The precipitated products of the examples are mixed, either in their acid condition or after neutralization, with cellulose, dried at a low temperature, ground and moulded under heat and pressure. Specifications 213,567, 248,729, and 339,601, [all in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the use of aldehydes in general and of derivatives of urea and thiourea, and includes an example according to which a solution of urea and thiourea in neutral formaldehyde is added to hot acidified formaldehyde alone and the products which precipitate on boiling then dried. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Synthetic resins are prepared by adding a neutral or alkaline condensation product of urea and thiourea with formaldehyde to a hot acid condensation solution of urea with formaldehyde and continuing the heating until a resinous product precipitates on cooling. Examples are given. The precipitated products of the examples are mixed, either in their acid condition or after neutralization, with cellulose, dried at a low temperature, ground and moulded under heat and pressure. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the use of aldehydes in general and of derivatives of urea and thiourea; this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
