Abstract

Fabrics are rendered crease resistant by treating with formaldehyde-urea or thiourea, or phenol-formaldehyde resins, condensation being effected on the fabric at a pressure of several atmospheres at 80--120 DEG C. Intermediate condensation products, or the components may also be used. In examples: (1) Fabric is immersed in a bath comprising 350 gms. of urea, 850 gms. of 40 per cent formaldehyde, 3,500 ccs. of water and 75 gms. glacial acetic acid; the fabric is wrung, dried at low temperature, placed in an autoclave under an air pressure of 10 atmospheres, and heated to 100--110 DEG C. for 15 mins, whereby the pressure rises to 14 atmospheres; (2) As in example 1, but the fabric is placed in the autoclave at atmospheric pressure and heated to 110 DEG C. whereby the pressure rises to 2 atmospheres; (3) A solution containing 100 gms. urea, 100 gms. thiourea and 360 gms. of formaldehyde is boiled, cooled rapidly, diluted with 3,5 litres of water and acidified with 1,5 per cent acetic acid; the fabric is immersed in this bath, centrifuged, dried at 40 DEG C., placed in an autoclave at 2 atmospheres and heated to 110 DEG C. to give a pressure of 4 atmospheres. British Specification 291,473, [Class 42 (i)], French Specifications 657,348, 753,559, and 766,829, German Specifications 318,509, and 556,393, and Italian Specification 265,995 are referred to.
