Abstract

Acetic acid and its homologues such as butyric acid are extracted from their aqueous solutions by means of a phenol such as cresol, and the extract is heated so as to drive off the remaining water without decomposing the compound of the acid with the cresol, a temperature of 100-105 DEG C. being suitable. After the removal of all the water (with a little acid) in this manner, the acid is expelled by heating to a higher temperature (135-140 DEG C.) to produce an anhydrous acid.
