Abstract

A wick is stiffened by impregnating with an alkaline aqueous solution of a phenol-formaldehyde condensation product and then heating in an oven to 150 DEG C. A suitable solution is obtained by mixing 500 c.c. of 87 per cent phenol or cresol, 750 c.c. of water, and 22 gr. caustic soda and heating to about 90 DEG C.; 170 c.c. of formaldehyde solution is then slowly added and the total brought to boiling temperature. The mixture is then allowed to cool and is ready for use.
