Abstract

In dyeing animal fibres by the caustic soda hydrosulphite process, the alkalinity of the vat is reduced by the addition thereto of benzoic acid, malic acid, phthalic acid or anhydride, phosphoric acid, or a tar acid such as phenol or a cresol, in sufficient proportion to neutralize alkali present in excess of 0.25 per cent. Examples show the dyeing of wool with Caledon Brilliant Purple RR using benzoic acid or phthalic anhydride, and with Caledon Jade Green using phosphoric acid, or o-cresol, or a mixture of phthalic anhydride and o-cresol. Reference is made also to dyeing with Caledon Yellow 8G, Caledon Red BN, and Caledon Brown KT. The Provisional Specification describes the use of a weak acid generally for the neutralization.
