269,155. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. April 7 1926, [Convention date]. Addition to 253,118. Sulphonic acids. - Substituted aromatic sulphonic acids are obtained by treating an aromatic hydrocarbon with methyl or ethyl alcohol and oleum or chlorosulphonic acid or a mixture of oleum and chlorosulphonic acid, the alcohol and the acid being added simultaneously to the hydrocarbon, or the alcohol being added to a mixture of the acid and hydrocarbon. In an example molten naphthalene is heated with a mixture of ethyl alcohol and oleum.
