Abstract

Artificial resins are prepared by directly condensing a decomposition product of an aromatic hydrocarbon such as naphthalene with a polyvalent alcohol. The decomposition may be effected with a mixture of bichromate and hydrochloric acid on a cold solution of naphthalene in sulphuric acid in the presence of the polyvalent alcohol or the decomposition product may be subsequently treated with an alcohol. Sulphur monochloride or phosphorous pentachloride may be used as oxidisation catalysts, the latter having a softening effect on the final product. Aromatic hydrocarbons such as substituted benzene homologues, polynuclear systems such as anthracene with or without naphthalene may also be decomposed. In examples: (1) naphthalene is dissolved in a mixture of benzene and sulphur monochloride and a mixture of concentrated sulphuric acid and glycerin is added, the resin produced is soluble in a mixture of alcohol and acetone. (2) A mixture of naphthalene and sulphuric acid is added to a solution of phosphorus pentachloride in glycerine and a resin produced.
