Samples furnished. 1-Amino-and-substituted amino-carbazols are obtained by mononitrating a carbazolsulphonic acid having at least one free 1- or 8- position, reducing the resulting 1- or 8-nitrocarbazolsulphonic acid, and splitting off the sulphonic groups by heating under pressure, if desired after replacing the amino group by a substituted amino group by normal reactions. Acid may be added to facilitate removal of the sulphonic groups. According to an example, carbazol-3 : 6 : 8-trisulphonic acid, prepared by sulphonating carbazol with oleum at 100‹ C., is mononitrated and the product reduced with iron and acetic acid to give 1-aminocarbazol- 3: 6 : 8-trisulphonic acid, which is then heated with dilute sulphuric acid in an autoclave to remove all three sulphonic groups.
