Abstract

o-Aminosulphonic acids are obtained by sulphonating primary aromatic amines with chlorsulphonic acid in presence of a solvent, preferably tetrachlorethane. The reaction may be completed in the solvent or the chlorsulphonate which sometimes separates may be collected and heated in the absence of the solvent. In examples asym-m-xylidine-5-sulphonic acid and 2-naphthylamine-1-sulphonic acid are obtained by sulphonating the corresponding amines with chlorsulphonic acid in tetrachlorethane solution. The following primary aromatic amines may also be converted into o-aminosulphonic acids in similar manner:-aniline, p-toluidine, o-xylidine, p-nitraniline, p-chloraniline, 3 : 5-dichloraniline, 2 : 4-dichloraniline, 3 : 4-dichloraniline, o-chlor-p-toluidine, dehydrothiotoluidine, o-anisidine, chloro-o-anisidine-1 : 2 : 5.
