Abstract
258,901. Austerweil, G. Sept. 25, 1925, [Convention date]. Borneol and isoborneol esters; pinene.-Esters of borneol and isoborneol are produced by the action on nopinene of organic acids diluted in a neutral solvent and at a temperature not exceeding 150‹ C. Toluene and xylene are suitable solvents, but pinene may be used. Two molecules of organic acid are used with one molecule of nopinene. Pinene is also produced by the reaction. In examples, (1) nopinene is heated under reflux with benzoic acid dissolved in xylene; (2) French spirits of turpentine are heated with benzoic acid or dichlorobenzoic acid diluted with pinene. The esters obtained may be converted into borneol and isoborneol in known manner.
