Abstract
Paraffin base fuel oil, which may be dissolved in ether, benzine, &c., is treated with diluted, concentrated, or fuming sulphuric acid whereby petroleum jelly and a heavy black resinous precipitate are obtained. After decantation or filtration the petroleum jelly may be purified by washing, e.g. with alcohol, neutralizing, decolorizing chemically or with earths, distilling at atmospheric or reduced pressure, drying, and by treating with sulphuric acid or liquid sulphur dioxide; the black precipitate may be washed with acid and used as a solid fuel. In examples, 1000 kg. of fuel oil is treated at 25 DEG C. with 25 kg. of concentrated acid at 50-70 DEG C. or with 50 kg. at 32-40 DEG C.; or 1000 litres of oil is dissolved in light benzene and treated with concentrated acid at atmospheric temperature or with slight heating.
