Abstract
Fabrics are cleaned by treating with an organic dry-cleaning solvent in which water is dispersed with the aid of a mahogany sulphonate. Preferably the mahogany sulphonates used are obtained by treating petroleum with fuming sulphuric acid or sulphur trioxide and extracting the sulphonated oil layer with alcohol. The extracted mahogany sulphonates are then incorporated in water and dissolved in a solvent such as naphtha, carbon tetrachloride or Stoddard solvent, to form a solution which is optically clear. Small amounts of alcohols or cresol may be added as dispersion assistants. Fabrics may first be extracted with a solvent to remove most of the grease, and are then immersed in the solution by which water-soluble stains such as syrup are removed. The used solvent is agitated with a dilute solution of common salt to replace the water removed by the fabric. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 19759/12, [Class 91, Oils &c.].
