Abstract

In the extraction of oils from coals by treatment with organic solvents, acids are added to the coal in amount sufficient to neutralize the basic constituents of the coals and the extraction is carried out in presence of the salts thus formed. Hydrochloric and sulphuric acids are particularly suitable and are preferably used in such dilution that the coal particles are wetted by spraying therewith. The wetting action may be aided by the addition of wetting agents, e.g. dibutyl naphthalene sulphonic acid or agents soluble in the solvent, e.g. benzene. 100 Grms. of air-dried Mid-German bituminous coal having a water content of 12,5 per cent are sprayed with 20 ccs. dilute sulphuric acid containing 4,25 grms. H2SO4 and then extracted with benzine in a Soxhlet apparatus. Yields of 15-19 per cent are obtained after extraction from 4-16 hours according to the amount of acid and wetting-agent added.
