319,623. Arnold, C. (Standard Oil Development Co.). March 24, 1928. Right to Patent relinquished. Tar.-Water gas tar emulsions are broken by addition of water-soluble sulphonic acids formed by the action of strong or fuming sulphuric acid or of sulphur trioxide or petroleum lubricating oil. The acids may be employed alone, in aqueous solution, or mixed with other substances, e.g. in acid sludges or in acid sludges partly or wholly freed from sulphuric acid, e.g. (1) by dissolving in water, and salting out with hydrochloric acid, the hydrochloric acid being allowed to remain or being removed by evaporation; or (2) by diluting with water until stratification occurs, preferably assisted by heating to 200-400‹ F., and removing the lower layer of acid.
