Abstract
Absorption products of olefines in oxygen containing inorganic polybasic acids are diluted with water or an aqueous solution or extracted with organic solvents to separate the neutral alkyl esters from the free polybasic acids, acid alkyl esters or neutralization products thereof and the neutral esters are then treated with alkaline agents to give alkali salts of the corresponding acid alkyl esters. In a modification, the free polybasic acids are substantially removed from the absorption products before separation of the neutral esters. The olefines may be derived by distillation, dehydrogenation, cracking or other pyrogenetic treatment from petroleums, shale oil, natural gas, coal, peat, or animal or vegetable oils, fats or waxes. In an example, water is added to an absorption product obtained in a continuous process from a cracked paraffin wax and sulphuric acid, so as to produce a lower layer comprising 69 per cent sulphuric acid. By the addition of aqueous alcohol to the upper layer, neutral alkyl sulphates and polymerization products are separated which on heating with caustic soda yield a soap. The free sulphuric acid may also be separated in the preliminary step by adding alkali or Glauber's salt solution. The separation is facilitated by the presence of ether or amyl alcohol. The alkyl sulphuric acid salts obtained may be used as wetting and emulsifying agents in the textile industry and also as levelling agents, flotation agents and spray oils. Reference is made to their use for greasing leather, preparing finely divided pigments and dispersing paraffin, tar and asphalt. A sample furnished under Sect. 2 (5) is prepared from a gasoline fraction obtained by cracking paraffin cakes and sulphuric acid. Water is added to the absorption product to separate the dialkylsulphates which after washing with water to remove residual sulphuric acid are heated with alcoholic caustic soda to give sodium alkyl sulphates. Small quantities of alcohols and polymers are removed by extraction with benzine.
