Abstract

In the cleaning of clothes and other fabrics by dry-cleaning solvent in which water is dispersed with the aid of an absorbefacient, the water is added to the solvent in an amount based on the weight and nature of the batch of clothes treated but not beyond the moisture tolerance thereof. In an example, a batch of 50--60 lb. of clothes is dried, weighed, dipped in the hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent itself to remove the worst of the dirt and to saturate the fibres, and then treated in the usual manner in 50 gallons of solvent in which is dispersed 5--30 per cent of water relative to clothes according as to whether fine silk dresses or men's rough clothes are being treated. For fine work the dispersion is preferably optically clear. The cleaning liquid is preferably filtered during the cleaning process, and after use--maybe after distillation--the water-content is made up again. Blending agents or absorbefacients specified are:--(1) 25 lb. of oleic acid, 25 lb. of naphtha, and 50 lb. of pure mahogany sodium sulphonate; a 6 per cent concentration in the oil is suitable. (2) Equal weights of oleic acid and sulphonated castor oil; 16 per cent concentration. (3) A mixture of sulphonated castor oil, potassium oleate, oleic acid, water, naphtha, and hexahydrophenol; 10 per cent concentration. (4) Sodium salt of sulphonated oleic acid naphthalene condensation product, sodium oleate, oleic acid, and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether; 10 per cent concentration. (5) Hydrogenated sulphonated anthracene, naphtha, oleic acid, water, sodium oleate; 8 per cent concentration. (6) Sulphonated hydrogenated anthracene, naphtha, oleic acid, water, potassium oleate, and monobutyl ether of ethylene glycol; 10 per cent concentration. (7) Oleic acid, naphtha, "Hexalin," caustic potash, water, triethanolamine; 6 per cent concentration. (8) Oleic acid, naphtha, butyl ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, caustic potash, water; 6 per cent concentration. Specifications 307,508, [Class 91, Oils &c.], and 392,931 are referred to.
