Abstract

1,264,916. Textile scouring process. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 17 Dec., 1970 [6 Jan., 1970], No. 591/70. Heading DIP. A process of scouring fabrics of both natural and synthetic origin comprises treating the fabrics with a water-in-oil emulsion based on an organic solvent not miscible with -water. The water content of the emulsion may be at least 50% by weight and preferably 70 to 90%. The emulsifier or emulsifier system is present with an HLB value of 3 to 7. The amount of emulsifier, which may be either non-ionic or ionic, present is 1 to 5% by weight of the emulsion. The emulsion is conveniently prepared by adding slowly the aqueous phase to the solvent plus emulsifier system while stirring. Emulsion viscosities with the range of 100 to 300 CPS (at 25‹C) are preferred for ease of application. The solvent may be petroleum hydrocarbons, oxygenated solvents and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Specific examples are white spirit and petroleum fractions distilling between 150 and 250‹C. The continuous phase of the emulsion is the organic solvent. The water phase may also carry agent used for other textile processes, such as enzymes for desizing, bleaching agents, dyes and finishes.
