Abstract

An incipiently unstable cleaning emulsion, which is particularly suitable for degreasing purposes but which may also be used for general household cleaning, comprises (a) a liquid aliphatic hydrocarbon, (b) water, and (c) 5-10% by weight of a non-ionic surface-active agent, particularly an ethylene oxide condensate with octyl- or nonyl-phenol. The hydrocarbon (a) is suitably white spirit or deodorized kerosene, but may also be a petroleum fraction containing a small proportion of aromatic hydrocarbons; the hydrocarbon should have a narrow distillation range, a flash point preferably above 73 DEG F., and should comprise 30-60% by weight of the composition, the water (b) amounting to 65-30%. It is preferred that the composition include up to 5% by weight of a mild alkali, such as sodium sesquicarbonate, sodium hexametaphosphate, or trisodium phosphate.
