Abstract

A cleaning fluid for gramophone records comprises an emulsion of a lubricant oil, preferably a silicone oil, in a dilute aqueous solution of a detergent. The lubricant in such a cleaning fluid protects and/or substitutes for the original layer of lubricant on the record as purchased, and also minimises shedding of cleaning cloth fibres into the record grooves.

Description

SPECIFICATION Inclusion of oil emulsions in gramophone record cleaning fluids The cleaning of gramophone records is recognized as a difficult problem. Very often after cleaning, although the record looks spotlessly clean, it is found upon playing it that there is now more surface noise present than before cleaning.
Personal investigations have led the applicant to believe that the cause of this post-cleaning increase in noise is due to inhomogeneities in the vinyl plastic from which the record is made. The plastic usually incorporates embedded particles of foreign material, or inhomogeneities due to imperfect mixing or polymerizing. Such imperfections cause surface noise, but can be concealed by the introduction during pressing of surface coatings of lubricant, which serve to prevent the stylus sensing the underlying imperfections of the vinyl polymer. If these coatings are removed by cleaning, the imperfections become exposed with a resultant increased surface noise.
It was consequently thought by the applicant that the incorporations of oil into the cleaning fluid would protect and/or substitute for the surface lubricant during cleaning. A silicone oil emulsion in dilute detergent was eventually found to be very suitable, being originally chosen because of the inertness of silicone, and because its water repellancy would protect the surface lubricants incorporated in manufacture from the action of the detergent during cleaning.
It was found subsequently that the oil also prevented shedding of cleaning-cloth fibres into the record grooves, and allowed easier removal of the fewer fibres that were shed. Silicone oil is not itself a very good lubricant, so obviously it may later be profitable to try oils with better lubricating ability. Nevertheless, the above mixture has been found to make a remarkable contribution to the effectiveness of record cleaning.
1. A cleaning fluid for gramophone records comprising an emulsion in a dilute aqueous detergent solution of a lubricant oil.
2. A cleaning fluid as claimed in claim 1 in which the lubricant oil is a silicone oil.
3. A method of cleaning a gramophone record which comprises the essential step of applying to a surface of the record a cleaning fluid as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2.
