Abstract
888,682. Preventing corrosion. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Nov. 24, 1960 [Nov. 26, 1959], No. 40424/60. Class 123(1). Corrosion of the steel walls of the tanks of oil tanker vessels by petroleum products or during cleaning with hot sea-water is reduced by spraying the walls before contact with the corrosive medium with an aqueous solution of 3 to 7 parts by weight of alkali metal nitrite or calcium nitrite, 2 to 6 parts of alkali metal acetate and 2 to 5 parts of an alkanolamine, the solution containing not more than 89% by weight of water. Sodium nitrite and acetate and triethanolamine are the preferred constituents and their preferred proportions by weight are respectively 23, 17 and 14.
