Abstract

Internal corrosion of steel &c. pipe lines &c. transporting hydrocarbon oil, gasoline, or other water-immiscible liquid is prevented, and existing rust and scale removed, by adding to the liquid small proportions of alkali metal nitrites, particularly sodium nitrite, preferably in the form of an aqueous solution. The concentration of the solution should be at least 0.04 per cent by weight, with the total nitrite not exceeding 0.01 per cent by weight of the liquid. The pH value of the solution is preferably maintained in excess of 6 by the addition of sodium hydroxide.
