Abstract

An aqueous emulsion for use as a cutting fluid particularly in the machining of titanium comprises casein, a fatty oil with good lubricating properties, an emulsifying agent, and a stabilizing agent. The fatty oil may be castor oil, although coconut oil may wholly replace it, and lanoline may replace it in part. The preferred emulsifying agent is triethanolamine oleate and the stabilizing agent is preferably glycerol. A non-coagulating preservative such as sodium benzoate, potassium benzoate or ammonium benzoate may also be added. A preferred composition consists of castor oil 20-50 grams, casein and glycerol each in approximately equal weight to the castor oil, triethanolamine oleate in approximately one-fifth the weight of castor oil, ammonium benzoate up to 50 grams and water to make 1 litre.
