Abstract
A composition, particularly for sizing textiles, comprises polymethacrylic acid, partially neutralized to a pH of not less than 4.5, a plasticizer, e.g. ethylene glycol, glycerol or sorbitol and an emulsifiable lubricant comprising a polyoxyethylene derivative of a long chain aliphatic organic compound and, optionally, a hard, high melting water-insoluble wax, e.g. paraffin, beeswax, carnauba; stearic or palmitic acids; glycerol, sorbitan, sorbide, polyoxy-ethylene glucose or polyoxyethylene sorbitol, stearate or palmitate. The polymethacrylic acid is neutralized, preferably not above a pH of 6, in aqueous solution by the addition of sodium or ammonium hydroxide, trisodium phosphate, triethanolamine, morpholine, 2 - amino - 2 - methyl - 1, 3 - propanediol, 2 - amino - 2 - methyl - 1 - propanol or urea. The polyoxyethylene group, in the water-soluble or water-dispersible derivative, may be connected through a carbonyl group, an ether linkage, an amine linkage, an amide linkage or a thioether linkage. The derivatives e.g. polyoxyethylene stearate, polyoxyethylene castor oil, and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monopalmitate, may be prepared as described in Specifications 375,842 and 380,431. The composition may be prepared dry, e.g. by mixing the molten lubricant with a milled mixture of the other ingredients and granulating, and then dispersed in water.
