Abstract

Vitiated air is freshened by contact with a composition containing as the essential active ingredient an open chain aliphatic alcohol or aldehyde (which in the case of an aldehyde may contain aryl substituents) having a carbon content of C6-C20 in an amount ranging from 0.03 per cent. to 0.5 per cent. The composition may advantageously also contain a chlorophyll or a derivative thereof. Specified active compounds are 3-hexene-1-ol, 2-hexene-1-ol, 2-4-nonadiene-1-ol, 2-6-nonadiene-1-ol, para tolyl acetaldehyde, phenyl acetaldehyde, phenoxy acetaldehyde, beta propyl acrolein, beta butyl acrolein, beta amylacrolein, beta hexyl acrolein, 3, 7, 11, 15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecene-1-ol, hexadienal, betaphenyl amyl acrolein (amyl cinnamic aldehyde) and phenyl ethyl formate or mixtures of certain of these compounds. Chlorophyll derivatives include chlorophylls-a and -b; oil, water or alcohol soluble plant extracts containing chlorophyll and copper, sodium, magnesium, sodium-copper, sodium-iron and sodium-magnesium compounds of chlorophyll. The composition may be in solid or liquid form, e.g., as a water-alcohol solution. The process may be effected by spraying the solution into the air or flowing the air over the solution; or the composition may be absorbed within or upon a carrier or surface with which the vitiated air is contacted.
