Abstract

1380507 2,4-Diaryl-thiazolines and thiazoles LABORATORIO PRODOTTI BIOLOGICI BRAGLIA SpA 12 July 1972 [20 July 1971] 32498/72 Heading C2C Compounds of general Formula I in which R 1 and R 2 may be the same or different and are phenyl, naphthyl or heterocyclic groups optionally substituted by alkyl, halogen, hydroxyl, nitro or trifluoromethyl, and R 3 is a radical formed from a C 2-6 aliphatic carboxylic acid or a salt nitrile or ester thereof, are prepared by reaction of a compound (6) of formula R 2 -CO-CH(SH)-R 3 with a nitrile R 1 -CN. Compound (6) is prepared by reaction of an α- halogenoketone, R 2 -CO-H(Hal)-R 3 , with an equimolecular amount of sodium or potassium thioacetate in a polar solvent to form a compound (7) of formula which is treated with aqueous alkali. Dehydration of compounds I by heat or acid catalysis produces compounds II 2 - [4 - p - Chlorophenyl - 4 - hydroxy - 2- phenyl - thiazoline - 5 - yl] - acetic acid, its methyl ester and the corresponding thiazole compounds are prepared. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,262,292.
