Procedure for preparing thiazole derivatives, with herbicidal properties, of the formula: **(See formula)** where X is a chlorine, bromine, fluorine or iodine atom; Y is a hydrogen atom or a lower aliphatic radical; R is a lower aliphatic radical; and Z is (a) a divalent radical of the formula: **(See formula)** wherein R1 is an optionally substituted lower hydrocarbyl radical or (b) a divalent radical of formula: **(See formula)** wherein R2 is a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical and R3 is a hydrogen atom, an acyl radical or an optionally substituted lower hydrocarbyl radical; characterized in that a thiazole derivative of the formula is reacted: **(See formula)** with glyoxal to obtain compounds where Z has the formula: **(See formula)** these latter compounds optionally being reacted with an aliphatic alcohol of formula R3OH in the presence of an acidic catalyst to obtain compounds wherein Z has the formula: **(See formula)** and the latter products being optionally reacted with a carboxylic acid or chloride to obtain compounds in which Z has the formula **(See formula)** where R is an acyl group.
